Sunny is
a Sun Conure that we got in 2002. We don't know if Sunny is a boy or a girl, so
I will refer to it as "her".
Sunny is a very sweet bird (sometimes, but she is very loud. She squawks whenever there are
other people over, or when she sees someone coming down the stairs. Sunny loves
to give us kisses and preen us, but she will only play with Colin, Carol, and
Ron. She will not tolerate strangers or Kyle as they are not part of
"flock". Sunny is full of bright
yellows and reds, and also blue, green, and orange. In the mornings Sunny loves
to play and eat, while at night, she is a lovable bird that snuggles with
us.
But Sunny has a dark side. She
tends to be very stubborn and flaky. Sometimes Sunny loves to be with me
and will get on my finger or ride around on my shoulder, but other times she
would rather rip my face off. The same is true with Carol, but one person
she ALWAYS loves and plays with is Ron. She will never turn down stepping
onto his finger and will fly right to him whenever he walks into the room.
We don't know why. Maybe she just likes to preen his goatee or something,
but we really can't figure it out.
Sunny doesn't just eat birdseed like a lot of
people think. Tropical birds like this (Sun Conures are from Central America and
Brazil) have to eat many fruits and vegetables to keep healthy. Her favorite
foods are pear, apple, carrots, raisins and much more. Strangely, Sunny
loves to drink 100% juices (which are just fruit and are fine for birds), and
Ice! Why would a bird from the jungle love to eat ice? If you are interested in
getting a bird, research a lot first. Make sure you get one that is in your
price range, is quiet, not very large, and one that really enjoys being with
you. Birds like this will only bond to 1-3 people, and will bite anyone else
unless very well trained.
Conures and many other birds have hookbills, and very strong jaws which can tear
out skin and even muscle with larger birds (like Macaws and Cockatoos). Birds
can also make a huge mess (whether water, food, poo or feathers), but with the
right love and health, birds can be great companions for life. A bird like this
can live from 30-40 years, so make sure you can outlive it or pass it on to
somebody it trusts. To learn more about Sun Conures, Click
